Reliable Leaders

1. If someone was introducing you to their family, which of your titles, positions, or relations would they be most likely to mention?

Read Titus 1:1-15

2. What does Paul tell you about his relationship to God?

3. Does the list of leadership qualifications emphasize skills, or character? Why?

4. How is this list different from Paul’s list in 1 Tim. 3:2-7? Why the differences?

5. What disqualifies a person from eldership?

6. Based on these qualifications, if you were responsible for nominating people for your church’s Leadership Board, would you nominate yourself? Why or why not?

7. Which qualifications in vs. 8-9 are most important to you?

8. How can your group help you develop these qualities?

Titus 2:1-10
How to Behave

1. When you were a teenager, how did you decorate your room to show who you were?

Read Titus 2:1-10

2. List the qualities Titus was supposed to teach old men:

Young men:

3. How would you teach those qualities to old and young men?

4. What are slaves supposed to do?

5. Who are your “slaves”?

6. Who are you a “slave” to?

7. Why does Paul emphasize self control? (Titus 1:6, 10; 2:2, 6, 12, 3:3)

8. Why does he emphasize “doing good”? (Titus 2:3, 6, 14; 3:1, 8)

What Grace Does

1. Tell us about a time when you deserved justice from your parents or an authority figure and you got either grace or mercy instead.

2. What’s the difference between “ungodliness” and “worldly passions?”

6. How does grace “teach” us to say no to these things?

7. What are the two reasons Jesus gave himself for us? How are they different? What does this tell you about God’s agenda for mankind?

8. Think of one thing that is a temptation for you these days. How could the group help you say “no” to that?

Titus 3:8-11
What Grace Does

1. What, in your opinion, is the most important character trait for a healthy church?

Read Titus 3:8-11

2. “This is a trustworthy saying.” What is Paul referring to? What’s the trustworthy saying?

3. How does being justified by grace make us careful to devote ourselves to doing what is good?

4. What are “these things” in 8b, and how are they excellent and profitable for everyone?

5. What kind of foolish controversies might the Cretans have been having?

6. What kind of arguments and quarrels about the law might they have been having?

7. How does Paul say to deal with divisive people? What counts as divisive?

8. Why is it so important not to be divisive or argumentative in the church, and how can a church avoid it?

9. How are you coming with your habit/life-style change?

Titus 3:12-15
What Grace Does

1. Tell us about someone you played “gofer” for at some point in your life.

2. Tychicus is mentioned in five books of the N.T.:

Col. 4:7 (written in 60 A.D.)
Eph. 6:21 (written same time)
Acts 20:4 (written by Luke in 61 A.D., but incident took place much earlier)
2 Tim. 4:12 (written 63 A.D.)
Titus 3:12 (written 62 A.D.)

3. From these, reconstruct as much as you can of Tychicus’ life, priorities, and personality.

4. Paul, the spiritual giant, decided to winter in Nicopolis, which was on the west coast of Greece. (a) How do you think Paul came to the decision about where he would spend the winter? (b) What do you think Paul planned to do there during the winter?

5. Why would Paul want to help a lawyer?

6. Why must “our people” learn to devote themselves to doing good? What is it about doing good that is so important for Christians?

7. What do you suppose Paul meant by “doing good”?
