The Story behind The God Questions

It began over lunch

Co-authors and pastors Hal Seed and Dan Grider used to meet once a month for lunch at Pat and Oscar’s restaurant in Carlsbad, California to encourage and sharpen each other.

One day, their conversation ranged to how fruitful Rick Warren’s 40 Days of Purpose campaign had been in their churches.  Dan and Hal agreed that they’d like to hold one or two church-wide campaigns each year because they’d like to see that boost of momentum regularly.

They went to the Christian bookstore over in the next shopping center and were surprised to discover that there weren’t any other church-wide campaigns.  The two friends decided to write one that they could use in their churches.

Hal had experience with apologetics and they felt that a series that reached out to seekers and at the same time equipped believers would have the broad appeal that their campaign needed.

God worked at Daybreak Community Church

Dan did the alpha version of The God Questions in his church, Daybreak Community Church, in 2005.

  • Twenty-three new small groups were started
  • Thirty-eight new small group hosts and leaders were identified
  • Members of the church used the book to invite friends
  • Finances increased throughout the church
  • Members thanked Dan for assisting them in reaching their friends

New Song Church also saw God’s hand

Hal ran the beta version of the campaign at New Song Community Church in Oceanside, California in January, 2006. During this campaign:

  • The number of people in small groups increased by 50%
  • Three seeker-focused small groups began
  • Forty seekers joined small groups
  • Thirty-six people came to Christ
  • Members began “leaving” copies of the book where friends would ask about it

Outreach, Inc. publishes God Questions tools

Scott Evans, the founder of Outreach Inc., saw how God was using The God Questions and partnered with Hal and Dan to develop the material into a full campaign that could be used by churches across the country.

Now churches are using the campaign kit, the sermon series, the participants’ guide, the marketing materials, the Tshirts, the brochures, and the gift edition to reach their cities.

And the momentum continues to build.
